Bring your little pirates to the 30th Annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival on Saturday September 6 – Sunday, September 7, 2014.
The Ocean Institute is celebrating its 30th year hosting the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival, the largest annual gathering of tall ships on the West Coast! Come and explore the majesty and wonder of tall ships through the smells, sounds and sights of real working tall ships. Interactive living-history encampments including blacksmiths, schrimshaw artists, and the infamous Port Royal Privateers are sure to entertain and amaze guests of all ages and are not to be missed. Come celebrate with us as we celebrate the area’s rich maritime history!
Participating tall ships typically include the brig Pilgrim, Spirit of Dana Point, Californian, Curlew,Exy Johnson, Irving Johnson, and the American Pride.

Bring your pirates to learn about life on the high seas, how to tie a bowline, tie knots and make rope.
Inside the Ocean Institute
Your little ones will explore the past with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology and several archaeology exhibitors. Don’t forget to check out our interactive ocean exhibits throughout the day. *Pirate Adventure Pass required
On the Maddie James Seaside Learning Center and Maritime Wharf
Additional maritime activities will be available on the wharf throughout the day. Raise a sail using an old capstan or help haul up the yard! Listen to storytime or sing chanties with our very own first mate! *Please note that the wharf is accessible only when visiting the tallships and requires a Pirate Adventure Pass.
Around the Grounds
Learn how to swordfight with real pirates (using balloon swords of course)! Get your face painted to look like a pirate, and be on the look out for our roving musicians and the infamous Captain Jack!

Hours: The main festival hours are from 10am-5pm on Saturday, September 6th and 7th. The Ocean Institute will be open until 5pm on both days, however, the ships will close for tours at 3:30pm so they may prepare for Cannon Battles! The brig Pilgrim will remain open until 5pm, as she does not sail on the weekend. Vendors will begin to set up on Friday, September 5th and will be allowed to sell items to visitors. So come, visit our vendor area and view the Sunset Parade of Sail on Friday from 5pm-7pm.
Admission: The Pirate Adventure Pass is $5 for Ocean Institute members, ages 3 and up and $8 for non-members, ages 3 and up. This admission includes entrance into the Ocean Institute and touring all the participating tall ships.
Parking: parking is free at our festival; however parking is limited in the harbor. Please click on the link for parking and directions information and head straight to one of our two lots. There will also be shuttle busses.
