Our Favorite Family Friendly Halloween Movies

One of the ways our family spends quality time together is watching movies. I’ve compiled a list 21 of our family friendly favorite Halloween movies.

Some of these movies have been long time favorites ranging from when my boys were little to some new additions from our girls. All  of  these movies can be found on Amazon.

Ghostbusters (both I & II)

A long time family favorite. Ghostbusters had a major impact on my boys and had my oldest son running around with a proton pack for years.

Ghosts invade New York and force a trio of spirit exterminators to save the city in one of the biggest comedies of all time. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Sigourney Weaver head the all-star cast.

The Witches

You have to love this movie, it’s great!

Jim Henson (The Muppets) provides the amazing special effects in this story about a nine-year-old and his grandmother who turn the tables on a witch’s plot to turn children into mice.

 Harry Potter (the whole series)

My oldest daughter loves Harry Potter, so really were subject to these any time of the year.

Based on the wildly popular J.K. Rowling’s book about a young boy who on his eleventh birthday discovers, he is the orphaned boy of two powerful wizards and has unique magical powers.

Hocus Pocus

This has to be my favorite Halloween movie. I can’t have a halloween go by without watching it.

You’re in for a devil of a time when three outlandishly wild witches return from 17th-century Salem after they’re accidentally conjured up by some unsuspecting pranksters!

The Goonies

This is a classic!

A group of ordinary kids discover a secret treasure map, their sleepy seaport lives are suddenly transformed into a fun-filled, roller-coaster ride.

Casper

One of favorite cartoons as a child. This movie is just too cute.

Seeing is believing in this live-action adventure about Casper the Friendly Ghost, a kind spirit who just wants a pal, and his ghostly uncles, who want all “fleshies” out of their manor.

The Haunted Mansion

If you’ve been to Disneyland, naturally you can connect with this movie.

A workaholic real-estate agent drags his family to a Hunted Mansion

Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride

My oldest daughter and I really enjoy watching this movie together every year.

Tim Burton presents an animation of a young man who is whisked away to the underworld and wed to a mysterious Corpse Bride while his real bride waits in the land of the living.

 Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas

THIS IS HALLOWEEN!!! Come on, you gotta watch this every year.

Jack, King of Halloween, finds Christmas Town.

Halloweentown

Very cute Disney Halloween movie and family classic.

Marnie and her younger siblings return with their grandmother to her home in Halloweentown.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

 A true Halloween Classic!

This timeless classic from Charles M. Shultz and Bill Melendez is remastered and features many heartwarming scenes. Also included are the bonus episodes It’s Magic, Charlie Brown and Lucy Must Be Traded, Charlie Brown.

Beetlejuice

My boys loved this movie when they were little.

Emmy and Golden Globe-nominee Michael Keaton brings the title character of Beetlejuice — the “Ghost With the Most” — to life, so to speak.

Gremlins (I and II)

Another long time family favorite.

A small town is besieged by some furry and not-so-cute little creatures after a young man ignores the warnings of a wise elder regarding their care and feeding.

The Addams Family (and Addams Family Values)

Love this movie and the Addams Family Values.

When long-lost Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) reappears after twenty-five years in the Bermuda Triangle, Gomez (Raul Julia) and Morticia (Anjelica Huston) plan a celebration to wake the dead.

Coraline

My daughters don’t really get into this movie as much I do, I love it.

An adventurous girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets.

Labyrinth

If you for some reason have never watched this movie, you should! I tried to get my daughters and grandson to watch it this weekend but they’re distracted. No worries, I won’t give up, this is an awesome movie.

A young girl, who enters a world of her own creation, experiences her first awareness of love, responsibility and danger.

Monster House

A new family favorite.

Three friends discover that their neighbor’s house is really a living, breathing, scary monster.

Paranorman

My youngest daughter’s review of this movie “it’s creepy”

From the makers of Coraline comes the magically thrilling story of Norman, a boy who must use his ability to see and speak with the dead to save his town from a centuries-old curse.

Hotel Transylvania

An Adam Sandler Halloween movie, of course! Add it to the list.

Welcome to Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up and no humans are allowed.

Night at the Museum (1 and 2 – part 3 is on it’s way this Christmas and it looks good)

My youngest daughter loves how the dinosaurs come to life.

Larry Daley, a new security guard at The Museum of Natural History, soon discovers that when the lights go out, the gallery becomes an epic battleground fueled with non-stop action and adventure!

Edward Scissorhands

Another all-time favorite!

An uncommonly gentle young man, who happens to have scissors for hands, falls in love with a beautiful teenage girl.

 I know it’s a long list and I’m sure I’ll add more next year; so for now – these are our family favorite, gotta watch Halloween movies. I hope you can enjoy some with your family this weekend.
